New Mobil 1. The price is unheard of, so are the things it does.
What sort of person would contemplate paying around £15 for 5 litres of engine oil?
Only someone with more than a passing interest in their car engine and its welfare.
If you don't have this enthusiasm new Mobil 1 is not for you.
If you're still with us, you'll no doubt want to know why Mobil 1 costs over three times as much as the oil in your car now.
Don't blame the Government.
We're proud to say it's our own scientists who are responsible.
Strictly speaking Mobil 1 isn't an oil at all.
It's a synthesised lubricant, built-up molecule by molecule in our labs to outperform conventional mineral-based oils.
For example, piston rings can reach 500°F when you're roaring down the motorway and it's then your engine needs all the protection it can get.
Try telling that to a conventional oil.
If it keeps up this temperature for any length of time it starts to fall apart.
It breaks down chemically, thickens up and cokes up, just when it's needed most.
(Scientists call this thermal degradation.)
Mobil 1 thermally degrades too.
But a conventional oil does so significantly faster.
When you consider how much your engine's worth, £15 for that kind of protection doesn't seem a lot to ask.
Not that you'll be asked very often. Brace yourself.
Mobil 1 has been tested to give protection for up to 25,000 miles or 1 year between oil changes.
It's a hard one to swallow we know, especially when you're educated to an oil change every 6,000 miles or so.
But Mobil 1 stays cleaner and lasts longer precisely because it doesn't break down as quickly when things get hot.
It's then that nasty acids form, and gritty little impurities find their way into your sump.
With Mobil 1 your engine will stay cleaner, valves will get less clogged up and pistons will run smoother.
And petrol bills will be smaller.
Mobil 1 gives you on average, 10 extra miles per tankful of petrol.*
We know it's not a major consideration for someone like yourself.
But it is an indication of just how efficient Mobil 1 is at reducing engine friction.
It allows your engine to turn over more easily and therefore saves fuel.
How does Mobil 1 perform these feats?
With great difficulty. It took us, the world's third largest oil corporation, ten years to perfect.
To go deeply into the workings of Mobil 1 would require a couple of pages in New Scientist and a science degree.
Suffice to say that following extensive high-performance testing in engines, and severe over-the-road operations in high-speed fleets, Mobil 1 has been approved for use by Europe's leading car manufacturers** including VW-Audi, Ford, Opel, Mercedes, Vauxhall, Talbot, Citroen, Fiat, Volvo, Saab and the whole of BL Cars.
£15 for 5 litres.
Perhaps by now the price doesn't look so exorbitant.
It's still high, we'll admit. But maybe you should be asking yourself if you're paying enough for oil now.
Mobil 1 Everything about it is ahead of its time.
